The Journey Behind the Design

I have this instinct for clarity and craftsmanship that I honestly can’t turn off. For instance, when I see a handwritten sign that’s very sloppy, a pixelated flyer with squished images posted in a store, or a public service announcement poster with crop marks not chopped off and the glare from the lamination that makes the dark text on dark background impossible to read…I have to fight the urge to fix it. These moments remind me why I chose to work in design: I care about usability, storytelling, and making information easy to understand at a glance. My time in the Navy taught me to communicate clearly, work with urgency, but also do the job right, and that discipline shapes how I approach every project. Turning messy, overlooked, or poorly executed information into something people can actually use and appreciate is what drives me.

I’ve always loved making things that communicate effectively. When I was a kid, I was the one making signs for clubs and groups. Later in the Navy, I designed flight deck jersey stencils and flyers to catch the eye of servicemen and remind them to come see me, the transfer clerk, to prepare for changing commands or separation. That mix of craft, clarity, and purpose has always stuck with me. For instance, I really like how color, type, and layout work together as a system that makes a brand feel consistent and intentional across every touchpoint, creating a cohesive style and atmosphere. Especially now that I have completed my initial graphic design training, I see things the way a user would: what they need, what they notice first, what might confuse them, and what could make their experience smoother. Then I draw on my design training to start shaping the message. Always balancing clarity with visual interest: what catches the eye, what communicates clearly, and keeping it from getting too busy. Tone matters too; some projects need to feel structured and corporate, while others can be fun, loud, or playful. Reading the room and designing with intention are big components of how I work.
